With about 4000 species found, cockroaches are perhaps the most common pests found in the world, having been around for more than 300 million years. Adult cockroaches may measure between 2 – 80 mm in length, depending on species.

Cockroaches are usually active at night and during the day, hide in cracks and crevices in walls, cupboards, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. They are highly mobile, moving freely from building to building, between drains and sewers.

Common cockroaches found in Malaysia include large American, Harlequie and Australian cockroaches whilst smaller species include German and brown-banded cockroaches.

 Risk:

  • Cockroaches carry diseases and can contaminate food and utensils with their droppings, moulted skin, carcasses etc
  • Unpleasant odour may be present with cockroach infestations
  • Some people may develop allergies to cockroaches and in severe cases, may trigger asthma attacks when the allergen is inhaled or contaminated in food.
